Shed storage ideas that keep tools off the floor

A 6x4 shed has about 2.2m² of floor and nearly 20m² of wall and roof structure. Nearly every shed uses only the floor.

A shed is a garage with a tenth of the space and twice the damp. The classic failure is a 6x4 shed containing a lawnmower, a wheelbarrow and twelve long-handled tools, all on the floor, all leaning on each other, with the mower buried at the back.

The good news is that a shed's timber frame is itself a storage system. Every stud, rafter and noggin is a fixing point, which means shelves, rails and hooks go up in an afternoon with no wall plugs required. The bad news is damp — and unlike a garage, a shed has no thermal mass to buffer it.

Clear the floor first, then keep it clear

Everything comes out. Sort into: long-handled, powered, chemical, small hand tools, and things that are not garden equipment at all. That last pile is usually larger than expected and does not belong in the shed.

Then decide the one thing that has to live on the floor — usually the mower — and design everything else onto the walls and roof structure around it.

  • Empty the shed completely onto a tarp.
  • Identify the single largest item and give it a defined floor footprint.
  • Remove anything that is not garden, outdoor or DIY related.
  • Check the floor for soft spots and damp before putting anything back.
  • Lift everything that goes back in onto a rack, shelf, hook or pallet.

Wall storage ideas for a shed

  1. Fit a vertical tool rail for long handles

    A single horizontal rail at about 1.5m with spring grips or J-hooks holds spades, rakes, forks, brooms and hoes upright against the wall. This is the highest-impact change in any shed and typically recovers a third of the floor.

  2. Add pegboard between the studs

    A pegboard panel screwed to battens between two studs holds secateurs, trowels, string, gloves and hand tools at a glance. Sheds are dark, so visible storage matters more here than in a garage.

  3. Use the gaps between studs as shelves

    A shed's studs project into the room, creating natural 400–600mm-wide bays. Short shelves spanning between two studs need only two screws each and cost almost nothing.

  4. Hang a wheelbarrow vertically

    A wheelbarrow on the floor consumes about 0.8m². Hung by its front lip on two heavy hooks, it takes almost none. Fix into a stud — a barrow is heavier than it looks.

  5. Put magnetic strips inside the door

    The back of a shed door is unused and takes a magnetic strip for small metal tools, or a shallow rack for gloves and twine. Keep the weight low so the door still hangs true.

Use the roof space

The triangle above door height in an apex shed is completely dead space, and it is the driest part of the shed because it is furthest from the floor.

  1. Lay a shelf across the tie beams

    Boards laid across the horizontal roof ties create a loft platform for light, bulky items — plant pots, fleece, netting, cushions. Keep the load light and spread it; these members are sized for the roof, not for storage.

  2. Hook hanging baskets and coils from the rafters

    Hose coils, extension leads, netting and rope hang neatly from rafter hooks and stay untangled, which is more than they manage on a floor.

  3. Store timber offcuts on overhead bearers

    Two brackets spanning the width at high level hold offcuts flat and out of the way. Off the floor also means they stay dry enough to actually use.

Storing mowers, bikes and bulky equipment

  1. Give the mower the door-adjacent floor space

    A mower is the heaviest and most frequently moved item in most sheds, so it belongs where it can be rolled straight out. Storing it at the back guarantees everything else gets moved twice each time you mow.

  2. Hang bikes on the wall or from the rafters

    A vertical wheel hook takes a bike in 400mm of wall. In a small shed, a rafter-mounted hook that lifts the bike above head height often works better still. Let a wet bike dry before hanging it against timber.

  3. Coil hose on a wall reel, not the floor

    A hose on the floor is a trip hazard and kinks permanently. A wall-mounted reel fixed into two studs solves both. Drain it before winter — trapped water splits hoses when it freezes.

  4. Stand strimmer and hedge trimmer on hooks

    Powered garden tools have awkward shapes and vulnerable cutting heads. Two hooks per tool, head upward, keeps the blades clear of everything and the cable coiled.

Damp, ventilation and shed security

A shed is a thin timber box with no insulation, so its interior tracks outdoor humidity closely and condenses on any cold metal surface. Damp is not an occasional problem in a shed — it is the default condition, and storage has to be designed for it.

  • Raise the shed off the ground on bearers or a paved base with a damp-proof membrane.
  • Lift everything inside off the floor — pallets, shelves or feet under any tool cabinet.
  • Add a vent at low level and one at high level on opposite walls to get airflow rather than trapped air.
  • Wipe metal tools with an oily rag before winter; unprotected steel will pit in a single damp season.
  • Keep the roofing felt intact — most shed damp comes in through the roof, not the walls.
  • Store chemicals and fuel in a sealed, frost-tolerant, lockable box; check labels for temperature limits.
  • Do not store petrol or propane in a small enclosed shed near any ignition source.
  • Fit a hasp with a closed-shackle padlock and consider hinge bolts — shed hinges are usually the weak point.

Can I fix shelves straight to a shed wall?

How do I stop tools rusting in a shed?
